He identified five world regions where people live longest and are generally healthier. In these regions people normally live to be over 90 and have low rates of diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cancer. What’s their secret? Blue Zone Diet Means More Vegetables And Less Red Meat
Plant-based food is dominant in this diet. People in Blue Zones eat lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts, whole grains and seeds. They consume meat about 2-3 times a week. When it comes to fish, the Blue Zone diet recommends sardines and cod. Eggs and dairy products are included too, but not more than three or four times a week. Olive oil, especially the extra-virgin kind, is consumed on daily basis.
Beverage Dos And Don’ts
The Blue Zone diet focuses on 4 beverages: water, tea, coffee and red wine. You should drink 8 glasses of water daily. Coffee is consumed mostly in the morning, while tea is recommended all day. The good thing is you don’t need to give up alcohol as people in Blue Zones usually drink 1-3 small glasses of red wine a day. This is healthy for you because red wine contains antioxidants and flavonoids and they are good for the heart. Sodas and other sugary drinks are not allowed in the diet.
Blue Zone Diet 80% Rule
Stick to the 80% principle, which means you should stop eating when you feel 80% full. This is what people in Okinawa do and the result of following the rule is that weight stays in control and there’s no obesity. To be able to do this it’s important to eat slow and enjoy every bite. This is also great for your digestion.
