There is no such thing as having too many makeup brushes” – Nanshy
Yup! That is true! You can have all the makeup brushes ever invented in the world, but you can still feel like you’re missing something. And there really is nothing wrong with that either. We’re women and we all love to have at least a hundred choices don’t we? Be it in clothes or shoes or jewelry or makeup!
In makeup though, you can have a million brushes, but if you don’t have the right ones, then you cannot get your makeup right. And if you do use the right tools, then you can conquer the world with the most amazing flawless makeup!
Do you sometimes try 5 different brushes to get that glitter eye shadow on flawlessly and finally end up using your finger?
Yeah, we feel you. The struggle is real. And you know what; sometimes your finger is the best tool!
Since the array of makeup brushes as well as makeup products have expanded beyond comprehension in the market, it has become super confusing to choose one makeup brush for one purpose too. You can’t use the same brush to blend in a cream contour and a powder contour right?!
So that is why, here is a quick list of 12 essential makeup brushes and the correct ways to use them (we’d stop at 10 but you know, that is not enough):
1. Powder Brush
This one is a makeup staple for anyone who wears makeup. It is usually quite dense with long, fluffy and soft bristles and it is used to set your makeup with powder for an airbrushed look. It also helps to sweep away any extra makeup without messing up your put together look.
2. Foundation Brush
A good foundation brush is very crucial to the whole makeup look because that is what you’re using to apply the base. Now foundation brushes come in different types; flat, fluffy, dome shape and even angled. For full coverage and an even pore-less finish, you can use a dense dome shaped one or a flat one. Ideally you can apply foundation in the centre of your face and then blend it in with sweeping motions outward towards your hairline.
3. Beauty Blender
This is pretty much an all-purpose blending tool. You can dampen it with water, or makeup setting spray or an essential oil or even with your favorite skincare serum and dab it over foundation, concealer, contour, blush or anything that needs blending. It is best used for even sheer coverage.
4. Concealer Brush
These can become your holy grail in covering up your dark spots, dark circles and blemishes. Find one that has firm and at the same time soft bristles for precise application and blending. You can also use it to clean up your eye-makeup, eyebrows and lipstick.
5. Blush Brush
This is one brush that can help you completely pull together your entire makeup look. It is smaller than a powder brush, with the usual dome shape and longer softer bristles. It picks up product and helps to concentrate it over a smaller area, while still giving a super smooth and blended look. To perfectly define your cheeks, pick up enough product, dust away the excess and apply it on the apples of your cheeks in circular motions. Smile to know where exactly to apply them.
6. Kabuki Brush
This is a very versatile brush with a flat top and very dense, voluminous, super soft bristles. You can use this to apply bronzers and powders and also for evening out your whole makeup. You can also use it to blend in any harsh lines. Ideally, apply bronzer in a 3 shape, starting from your hairline and temple, then your cheekbone and then your jawline.
7. Blending Brush
This is the most essential eye shadow brush that everyone must have. A good blending brush is one which has a narrow tip and flexible soft bristles that allow you to dust eye shadow along the crease of your lids. You can start off any eye-makeup look with a crease color and use a blending brush with small circular motions. You can also use it to blend out any harsh lines to achieve a smooth and blended look.
8. Flat Eyeshadow Brush
This is the second must-have eye shadow brush. While you can use the blending brush to blend all the colors together, you need something to apply the colors first don’t you?
Use a flat eye shadow brush that is just enough fluffy to pat color over your eyelids. You can use it wet for more color intensity as well. Ideally apply eye shadow in smooth windshield wiper movements for the best application.
9. Angled Eyeliner Brush
This is an essential if you want a flawless cat-eye. The angular shape of the brush helps to measure and create the perfect wing and the firm bristles help to work with liquid, gel and even dry powder eyeliners.
10. Brow Brush
Look for a double ended brow brush that has a spoolie on one end and an angled brush on the other end. The brush end can help you apply any kind of brow product including powders, waxes and pomades. The spoolie end can help keep your brows groomed and also in blending the brow products well. You can also use it to apply eyebrow gel to make them stay put.
11. Contour Brush
For the perfect sculpted cheekbones and jawlines, use an angled contour brush with sufficiently dense and soft bristles. You can perfectly chisel out your features with cream or powder products.
12. Fan Brush
Fan brushes can be used to apply that power glow on your face which totally nails your entire makeup look – the highlighter. It can also be used to wipe off any excess powder or eye shadow fall out to clean up your makeup look. They have super light bristles and are shaped like a fan.
